ASBESTOS INSPECTIONS & IDENTIFICATION

Asbestos is thought to have more than 3000 applications worldwide and Australia was one of the highest users of asbestos containing materials up until the late 1980s. Asbestos inspections must be undertaken by a Licenced Asbestos Assessor to;

• safely inspect a site and determine what products may contain asbestos
• determine the type of asbestos present through microscopic NATA laboratory analysis of fibres
• assess the potential risk to human health from asbestos?

ASBESTOS REGISTER AND CLEARANCE CERTIFICATES

All workplace buildings constructed before 2003 must record any asbestos or asbestos containing materials on an asbestos register that is kept on the premises. The asbestos register must be kept up to date, be easily accessible to others in the workplace and be reviewed at least once every five years. Even if no asbestos is identified at your workplace, the site must still be issued a clearance certificate by a Licensed Asbestos Assessor and the clearance information must be stated on the register.

ASBESTOS MANAGEMENT PLANS

A workplace or demolition site where asbestos has been identified must have an asbestos management plan. ASBESTOS SUPERVISION, AIR MONITORING AND REMOVAL

Air monitoring measures the level of airborne asbestos fibres during work on asbestos containing material. It is mandatory for all friable asbestos removal to be air monitored and while not always necessary for other asbestos related work is still considered to be good Work Health & Safety practice. For friable asbestos removal an independent, Licenced Asbestos Assessor must undertake air monitoring of the asbestos removal area and provide clearance once the job has been completed that the area has been left decontaminated. Friable asbestos removal must also be conducted or supervised by an A class licenced asbestos removalist.
